McGill Varsity Rowing Selection Fall 2018 Rowing Season


PURPOSE

This selection document establishes the goals, selection criteria and process for the McGill Varsity Rowing programs for the Fall 2018 Rowing season. The McGill Rowing Coaching Staff may advise athletes of modifications during selection week.


OBJECTIVE – WOMENS AND MENS VARSITY ROWING

Select the fastest lineups to represent McGill, with an emphasis on achieving podium performances at the Ontario University Rowing Championships (OUAs) and A-finals at the Canadian University Rowing Championships (CURCs).

Select Junior Varsity athletes who demonstrate development potential in the sport of rowing and who may, in the following years, achieve the above.


PRINCIPLES:

Any athlete with a previous competitive rowing background, or having competed in a Novice season, is welcome to try out for the Varsity Rowing program.

We strive to maintain a fun, inclusive, challenging and competitive Rowing environment, which allows Varsity Athletes to develop within the sport, including High Performance.

All McGill Rowers are bound by the McGill Athletics Code of Conduct, and the McGill University policies on student conduct.


TRYOUT DATES:

Varsity selections will run from Monday August 27th through Friday August 31 st ,
2017, from 6am-8am at the Olympic Rowing Basin on Ile Notre Dame.

Second practices may be announced during this week by the coaching staff.


PREREQUISITES:

Any athlete with a previous competitive rowing background, or having competed in
a Novice season, is welcome to try out for the Varsity Rowing program. Very strong
preference will be given to athletes having participated in a winter training
program, and having competed in the sport of rowing over the summer months.
An athlete trying out must be a full-time student at McGill University, and must meet
the eligibility requirements of the OUA and McGill Athletics.


SELECTION CRITERIA:

1 – ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY AND STANDING:

-Must be a full-time student at McGill University

-Must meet the eligibility requirements of the OUA and McGill Athletics.

2 – SUBMISSION OF LETTER OF INTENT – MANDATORY:

-DUE July 1st For Returning McGill Athletes (novice and varsity)

-DUE on first day of tryouts for New McGill Students and walk-ons

3 – PHYSICAL FITNESS AND ROWING FITNESS, INCLUDING ERG TESTING:

-2000m ERG test

-6000m ERG test

4 – ON THE WATER ROWING TECHNIQUE

-Assessed by the coaching staff in various lineups, during tryout week. Technical
drills will be used as well as steady state and speed work.

5 – ATTITUDE, COMMITMENT, AND COACHABILITY

-Assessed by numerous criteria including punctuality, communication with coaching
staff and other teammates, commitment to winter and summer training, work ethic,
and ability to integrate technical coaching feedback into changes on the water.

6 – FOR LIGHTWEIGHTS

-Lightweight women: 60.5Kg -Lightweight men: 74Kg

-An athlete trying out for lightweight must be at weight plus an allowance of 5 Kg during tryout week, and must demonstrate healthy nutritional and fitness habits conducive to maintaining weight.

7 – FOR COXIES

-Assessment of ability (steering, situational awareness, boat control, docking, calls)

-Compatibility, and attitude with other athletes and coaches

-Racing experience and results
