WOMENS AND MENS VARSITY AND JUNIOR VARSITY ROWING PROGRAMS
The GOAL of the McGill Varsity Athlete selection is to select the fastest lineups to
represent McGill on the University Racing Circuit, with an emphasis on achieving the
best possible results at the Ontario University Rowing Championships and Canadian
University Rowing Championships.
We strive to maintain a fun, challenging and competitive Rowing environment,
which allows Varsity Athletes to develop within the sport, including High
Varsity selections will run from Monday August 28 th through Friday September 1 st ,
2017, from 6am-8am at the Olympic Rowing Basin on Ile Notre Dame. Second
practices may be announced during this week by the coaching staff.
Any athlete with a previous competitive rowing background, or having competed in
a Novice season, is welcome to try out for the Varsity Rowing program. Very strong
preference will be given to athletes having participated in a winter training
program, and having competed in the sport of rowing over the summer months.
An athlete trying out must be a full-time student at McGill University, and must meet
the eligibility requirements of the OUA and McGill Athletics.
There are four broad selection criteria:
1 – OVERALL PHYSICAL FITNESS AND ROWING FITNESS:
-Assessed by a 2000m ERG test during tryout week, and other modalities (may
include running, core strength, max strength testing, other ERG tests)
2 – ON THE WATER ROWING TECHNIQUE
-Assessed by the coaching staff in various lineups, during tryout week. Technical
drills will be used as well as steady state and speed work.
3 – ATTITUDE, COMMITMENT, AND COACHABILITY
-Assessed by numerous criteria including punctuality, communication with coaching
staff and other teammates, commitment to winter and summer training, work ethic,
and ability to integrate technical coaching feedback into changes on the water.
4 – FOR LIGHTWEIGHTS
-An athlete trying out for lightweight must be at weight plus an allowance of 5 Kg
during tryout week, and must demonstrate healthy nutritional and fitness habits
conducive to maintaining weight.
The first step in the selection process will be to determine during tryout week, using
the above criteria, which athletes meet the standard for Varsity and are in
contention for representing McGill at the Varsity level at the Ontraio University
Those athletes who fall short of this standard may be either cut or invited to develop
within the Junior Varsity program. The goal of the Junior Varsity program is to act as
a developmental stepping stone for the Varsity program. Preference is given to
athletes who demonstrate strong developmental potential in the sport of rowing,
with a particular emphasis on attitude, commitment and work ethic. The
expectation is that an athlete would develop in the Junior Varsity program for one
season before advancing to Varsity.
Exact racing lineups may vary over the course of the season, with final decisions to
be made by the coaching staff.
We hope to see you all on the water!
