Boatrace 2004

The longstanding rivalry between the McGill and Queen’s rowing clubs could be seen yet again this year at the annual boat race which was held at the Lachine Rowing Club, allowing both teams a very unique racing experience. This years boat race was to be run on the historic 1878 Hanlan-Courtney challenge race course.

The Lachine Boat Club was originally founded in 1863 by a group of British, Scottish and Canadian engineers who were employed at building railway bridges along the Canal's pathway. Since its introduction as one of the oldest rowing clubs in North America, the Lachine Rowing club has had a proud history of hosting regattas, including a famous race with the Paris crew of St. John, New Brunswick in 1868. More importantly, in 1924 the Lachine Boat Club gave McGill University Rowing Club room to practice its "oaring". It was here that the first ever Canadian intercollegiate regatta was held between McGill and the University of Toronto.

The MURC put up quite a fight on the course on the brisk April morning, only to lose all three trophies, the D. Lorne Gales Challenge Cup, the Challenge Blade, and the Women’s Challenge Blade, to an extremely strong Queen's crew. Though the traditional format of the Boat Race was shortened to sprints only, due to weather conditions, both the Queen's and McGill crews performed well with exceptionally hard-fought races.
